Today is Nougat day! Google's latest operating system Android Nougat aka Android 7 has finally started rolling out to users. Android Nougat, previously called as Android N, was first released as an alpha build in March this year, prior to the annual developer conference of Google. While the update for now is available only for select phones, with the Nexus devices being the first to receive it, other phone users may also soon expect the Nougat on their phone.
Since the day of its announcement, Nougat has been the buzz of the town. Reason? Google explains it. "Android 7.0 Nougat is by far the sweetest release yet. There are over 250 major features in Android Nougat," says Sameer Samat vice president of Product Management, Android & Google Play.
A lot has been said about the Nougat. But how is it is different from Marshmallow and what is new in it? What exactly makes Nougat special and ''sweetest'', according to Google. Here is what the company says as it explains the new features inside Nougat.
It's personal
Nougat users will have better options to personalise their phones including more than 1,500 different emoji built into Android, out of which 72 emojis are brand new. Users can be more expressive now and have an option to choose from a really wide array of emojis.
Better control on settings
With quick settings control, users can easily access to things like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Flashlight technology. With Android Nougat, user can control what tiles go where, and accordingly place them to fit their needs.
Going local
User can enjoy apps with content based on local settings. For example, if someone speaks multiple languages, then search engines can show results in each of those languages.
Productivity gains
Nougat comes with new features like Multi-window, Direct reply, and Quick switch which help user do multiple tasks at once. With Multi Window feature user can run two apps side-by-side, while Direct Reply lets the user reply to notifications without having to open any app. With Quick switch, users can easily switch between two most recently used apps by simply double tapping the Overview button.
Better security
Google has added features like Seamless updates, File-based encryption and Direct Boot to ensure better security to it Nougat users. With Seamless updates, user can install software updates in the background without having to wait for the device to install the update and optimizes all the apps for the new version. This means user can faster updates and no more long reboots. Company also claims that Nougat can better isolate and protect files for individual users on their device. through file-based encryption. Direct Boot also helps the Nougat device start faster, and lets the apps run securely even before one unlocks the device while rebooting.

Android Marshmallow had introduced Doze feature. It is basically a power saving feature that makes the device go to sleep when not in use. However, users required to keep their phones still to turn on the mode. With Nougat, Doze works even if the user is walking and the phone is in the pocket. So what does mean? With Nougat, an Android phone will go to sleep more, faster and deeper. Hence, more battery savings.

Nougat comes with support for VulkanTM which is an advanced 3D rendering API. This will help developers create better looking games by utilising all those cores and extra performance inside the processors like the Snapdragon 82
